The Ferretti Yachts 1000 SkyDeck reimagines the elevated living space of a 30.13-metre yacht as a sheltered lounge, suited to owners who cruise in contrasting climates.
Ferretti Yachts' 1000 SkyDeck revisits the question of how owners should use the uppermost level of a thirty-metre motor yacht. Instead of leaving the entire elevated deck exposed to the elements, the Italian builder creates an enclosed lounge capable of operating as a comfortable retreat through changing weather and different cruising seasons.
An additional consideration is the relationship between the enclosed upper lounge and the captain's working environment. Designers must manage lighting and reflections so the social atmosphere does not interfere with safe operation, particularly during night passages. Guests may appreciate being close to the bridge, but the degree of separation between navigation and social activities is worth evaluating in person rather than assuming that every yacht has been arranged in the same way.
The SkyDeck edition retains the basic dimensions of the 1000 platform, with 30.13 metres of overall length, a maximum beam of 6.81 metres and a published draft of 2.29 metres. These figures place it among yachts that must balance substantial guest accommodation with the practical needs of marina access and efficient deck circulation.
For owners who spend part of their season in northern Europe and another part in warmer waters, this arrangement poses an interesting alternative to the traditional entirely open flybridge. The key choice is whether protected panoramic space creates more value over a full year than the extra flexibility offered by an open deck.
Ferretti describes the SkyDeck as a redesigned upper level in which the interior is sheltered but remains visually connected with the sea. The result is intended to preserve the feeling of sitting above the yacht while reducing exposure to temperature changes, spray and wind during a passage.
That proposal deserves examination from an operational perspective because a climate-controlled lounge can extend the number of usable hours in a sailing season. Owners can read, work or host a relaxed meal without assuming that every change in weather requires retreating to a lower saloon.
Enclosing the deck also calls for careful evaluation of visibility, ventilation, emergency egress and the amount of shaded exterior space that remains available. A yacht that looks inviting in a brochure must be judged against how people actually enter, leave and share its elevated spaces when underway and at anchor.
The shipyard offers Classic and Contemporary interior moods, developed with Italian design studio Ideaeitalia. These are not merely decorative labels, because material tone, contrast and furniture choices can alter the sense of intimacy or openness within the same underlying plan.
Some owners will prefer the more restrained materials and measured contrasts associated with the Classic option. Others may favour the fresher colour treatment described for the Contemporary interpretation, particularly if the yacht will be used frequently for informal entertaining.
Both choices should be assessed alongside maintenance and replacement needs over the life of the yacht. Fabrics, veneers and soft furnishings will be exposed to strong sunlight and intensive use, so the appearance of a sample on delivery day is only one part of the specification decision.
The official technical data lists five guest cabins and three crew cabins, with an engine choice between MTU 16V 2000 M86 and the more powerful optional M96L installation. The builder quotes different maximum and cruising speeds for each configuration, up to 28 knots in the optional installation, so buyers must compare like with like.
Fuel capacity is given as 9,000 litres and water capacity as 1,320 litres, useful starting points for planning but not guarantees of a particular cruising range. Actual consumption depends on hull condition, loading, weather, speed and the way onboard generators and air-conditioning systems are used.
The point of the SkyDeck is not to win a contest for the most open upper deck, but to challenge the assumption that every elevated relaxation space must be exposed. In this class, the strongest yacht is one whose arrangement matches the owner's real seasons, routes and pattern of entertaining, and the Ferretti concept gives that discussion a concrete form.
