Flow Marine Systems receives the 2026 IBEX mechanical-systems innovation award for FlowGuard, a marine HVAC condensate-protection solution with implications for yacht climate-system maintenance.
Flow Marine Systems has won the Mechanical Systems category at the 2026 IBEX Innovation Awards for FlowGuard Integrated Marine HVAC Condensate Protection. The announcement was made at the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference in Tampa on 6 October, with award selections judged by Boating Writers International and administered by the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
FlowGuard is identified in the award record as a condensate-protection development for marine climate equipment, rather than a new complete chiller or a replacement for a yacht's air-conditioning plant. The distinction is important: water management around climate machinery is rarely visible to guests, yet poor condensate arrangements can create serious maintenance and accommodation problems. The public awards statement recognises the product but does not provide a comprehensive independent engineering test report.
Cooling humid marine air creates condensation on cold evaporator surfaces and associated drainage paths. On a yacht, that moisture needs to be collected and routed away without leaking into furniture, electrical compartments, joinery or concealed spaces. Equipment can be installed correctly at commissioning yet still become problematic if a drain blocks, a pump fails, a hose moves or an inspection point becomes inaccessible during later refurbishment.
In warm and humid cruising areas, air-conditioning may operate for extended periods while crews manage frequent changes between generator power, shore supply and different occupied zones. Condensate-management arrangements need to cope with realistic heel, trim and motion where applicable, as well as routine washdowns and maintenance work around machinery. A solution that makes a fault easier to contain or identify can therefore serve a practical maintenance role even when it does not affect headline cooling capacity.
Builders and engineering managers evaluating FlowGuard should request the manufacturer's exact performance information, approved equipment compatibility and installation instructions. Matters to establish include whether it is intended for a particular air-handler arrangement, what happens during loss of power, how an alarm or intervention is communicated, and the access needed for testing and cleaning. The award title alone does not answer these questions.
Any added protection needs to work with the primary condensate drainage system rather than masking ongoing problems. A mis-sized trap, ineffective insulation, restricted outlet or badly routed pipe may require correction at source, and it would be misleading to assume a protection accessory can resolve every humidity or leakage issue. The chosen equipment should also be evaluated against existing onboard monitoring and service procedures.
Flow Marine Systems markets marine air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including chilled-water air handlers, titanium-condensor chillers, direct-expansion components and self-contained systems. The company emphasises corrosion-resistant construction, serviceable components and temperature-control performance for vessels operating in challenging environments. FlowGuard therefore adds a protection-related strand to a portfolio otherwise dominated by heating, cooling and refrigeration machinery.
The official manufacturer illustration accompanying this report shows Flow Marine's wider marine HVAC system, not an independently verified photograph of the FlowGuard product itself. For yacht and refit purchasers, the IBEX award is a reason to request a demonstration and detailed technical data, not grounds to claim an installation or an operating history aboard any particular superyacht.
