Captain-developed software from Helmwise turns crew notes and handover material into structured records, addressing the loss of operational knowledge when superyacht personnel rotate.

The information risk between departing and joining crew

Helmwise, a maritime software venture founded by former superyacht captain Charl Dettmer, is promoting its Handover App as a way to reduce gaps in knowledge when crew members rotate off a vessel. The product was introduced earlier in 2026 and is designed around the working reality of boats where a replacement officer, engineer or interior crewmember must quickly understand tasks left behind.

A yacht's operational knowledge rarely exists in one tidy system. Some information sits in maintenance records, other details remain in personal notes or messages, and smaller day-to-day decisions may never be written down until a crewmember is about to leave.

Converting everyday notes into a structured record

The developer describes a workflow in which crew can capture voice notes, photographs and written information and organise them into material suitable for a department handover. The aim is to make details about open tasks, recurring faults and practical procedures easier to retrieve than they would be in scattered private messages.

For engineering teams, a useful handover can identify a temporary repair, a part awaiting delivery or an unusual operating condition that has not yet appeared in the formal planned-maintenance record. For deck and interior teams, the corresponding information might concern service preferences, equipment configuration or outstanding work before the next guest trip.

Documentation, access and responsible use

Helmwise's product information describes AI-assisted preparation of handover material and the ability to produce records that can be passed to incoming crew. Technology can speed the collation of routine observations, but automatically structured content still requires the departing person's review and a clear process for checking critical facts.

Superyacht management also has to decide what belongs in a handover and what must remain in an approved technical or safety-management system. Sensitive guest information, personal data and passwords should not be copied into informal handover documents, and access to vessel records needs to be controlled when personnel leave.

Continuity is more than a checklist

A formal handover is especially valuable on yachts with rotational staffing, extended refit programmes or departments managed across several operating seasons. Newly joined crew can lose time repeating investigations if previous findings, decisions and limitations were not described precisely enough for a successor to act on them.

The new app is therefore relevant as an administrative tool for captains and heads of department, not as a substitute for certified procedures, direct training or the vessel's own official maintenance records. Its long-term effectiveness will depend on the quality of crew input and whether managers can keep documentation current rather than allowing another separate information silo to develop.
