International Extends Micron 350 Antifouling to Asia-Pacific Yacht Yards

International Yacht Paint has expanded its Micron 350 antifouling into the Asia-Pacific market, targeting owners and applicators working in warm waters where biological growth can be persistent. The AkzoNobel brand describes the product as a self-polishing, multi-season coating already used in Europe.

The regional introduction is not a new shipyard delivery or a change to one named superyacht. It is an equipment-supply development with consequences for yard specifications, haul-out planning and the materials that cruising yachts can obtain locally.

Warm-water growth changes the maintenance plan

International identifies barnacles, slime, algae and weed as common growth challenges in tropical and subtropical water. Stationary periods also matter because a boat left in harbour continues to accumulate fouling even without undertaking a passage.

Micron 350 is formulated to wear in a controlled way, smoothing rather than adding successive hard layers indefinitely. The manufacturer says this characteristic helps limit coating build-up and supports hull efficiency when applied and maintained correctly.

The advertised protection interval is up to two years, not a universal promise that every vessel can remain unattended for that period. Use pattern, water temperature, local regulation, coating thickness and berth conditions all affect a realistic maintenance plan.

The self-polishing approach and application window

International says the paint can be applied up to twelve months before launching. It specifies two or three brush or roller coats depending on the protection interval, with airless spraying reserved for professional applicators following the required process.

The product is recommended as part of an International coating system, including Interprotect and Primocon primers where appropriate. Previous coating condition and compatibility should be investigated before a yard selects a preparation route or overcoating procedure.

International lists GRP, steel, wood, cast iron and lead among suitable hull materials, with black and blue as available colours. Individual surfaces still need the correct substrate preparation, primers and application conditions; the broad list is not permission to omit technical checks.

Compatibility is a yard-level decision

The launch material cites Captain Osvaldo Cioppi of the Pershing 72 SILVER PEARL as a customer reference. His reported experience of warm- and cold-water cruising is a testimonial, not an independent controlled comparison across different yachts.

For a superyacht, antifouling performance is tied to operating cost as well as appearance. Growth can affect fuel use and the timing of underwater cleaning or a haul-out, while coating-system failure can create a more substantial repair task.

Why coating choices matter on a larger yacht

Captains and technical managers should verify the product's availability in their cruising region, approved biocide status and the yard's experience with the recommended system. Paint specified for one market should not automatically be transferred to another without checking local rules.

The expanded distribution gives Asia-Pacific yards another officially supported coating option. The practical decision remains vessel-specific: technical data, application instructions and an agreed inspection schedule should control the work.
