Marlink says yacht and vessel safety communications are shifting from minimum compliance toward greater redundancy as GNSS interference and remote operations grow.
Marlink says maritime safety communications are entering a period where resilience matters alongside regulatory compliance. More vessels now operate with extensive digital systems in remote regions, while GNSS spoofing, interference and geopolitical disruption have increased attention on what happens when a primary communications path is degraded.
For superyachts, the issue is particularly relevant on long-range itineraries where guests and crew may be far from terrestrial infrastructure. A compliant installation remains essential, but a resilient communications plan also considers how independent systems behave when individual links or services fail.
The company points to Iridium GMDSS and established services such as Inmarsat C as examples of systems that can offer complementary coverage and operational characteristics. Marlink's argument is that owners should not view every service as a direct replacement for another when combining independent paths can improve availability.
That does not mean every yacht needs the same communications architecture. Flag requirements, sea areas, vessel size, cruising plans and onboard equipment all affect what systems are appropriate.
Marlink also highlights the development of voice-based capabilities within the GMDSS ecosystem, adding another option to distress alerting and safety-information services. The company sees that as part of a broader move towards more flexible emergency communications rather than reliance on one mode or network.
New capability should be integrated carefully with bridge procedures so crew know which system to use and when. Equipment alone cannot replace training, drills and a clearly documented emergency communications plan.
For captains and technical managers, the practical exercise is to identify single points of failure across antennas, terminals, power supplies and network paths. Independent backup arrangements are most valuable when they remain usable during the same failures that disable the primary system.
Marlink's article is an industry perspective rather than a new regulation. Superyacht Guide has linked the existing Marlink company profile and presents the resilience recommendations as attributed guidance.
