Next Yacht Group Partners With Defenda on Onboard AI Security

Next Yacht Group is collaborating with Defenda Solutions on security for its locally operated onboard AI assistant and connected yacht services.

Next Yacht Group is working with Defenda Solutions on cybersecurity for its Next AI-Integrated System, a locally hosted artificial-intelligence platform designed for use on luxury yachts. The collaboration was reported on 14 October 2026 and focuses on risks that arise when onboard software can exchange information with operational and guest-service networks.

The project already involved AI Technologies in locally deployed artificial-intelligence models and YES Group in audiovisual and automation integration. Defenda's newly publicised role concentrates on security architecture, threat scenarios and protection of the wider technical environment rather than the announcement of a newly delivered yacht.

A security partner joins the programme

Defenda Solutions, a cybersecurity specialist with operations in Milan and Lucca, is advising on the protection of the yacht-based AI platform. The reported arrangement involves design-stage review instead of relying only on software checks after the system has been installed.

On a large yacht, connected equipment can include entertainment controllers, network devices, accommodation automation and technical monitoring. A weakness in one element may have consequences for other services if access restrictions are not designed and maintained carefully.

A local-first onboard AI assistant

Next Yacht Group's system is described as operating locally on the vessel, including when a stable internet connection is unavailable. The intended functions include support for monitoring, automation, maintenance information and aspects of daily life aboard.

Keeping processing aboard can reduce dependence on external cloud services and may give operators more control over information flows. Nevertheless, a locally hosted installation is not automatically protected against malicious software, mistakes or the misuse of privileged accounts.

Security by design rather than later repair

The collaboration includes analysis of the system's architecture and potential threat scenarios at an early stage. Defenda is also concerned with how access is granted, how network segments communicate and how vulnerabilities are identified before operations become dependent on the technology.

A design review can help identify avoidable exposures while equipment and software are still being selected. Security remains an ongoing operational responsibility, however, because onboard networks and applications can change during refits, upgrades and seasonal maintenance.

Artificial intelligence creates new risks

AI assistants that process instructions and technical information face risks distinct from conventional user interfaces. The reported work specifically examines prompt injection, manipulation of data used by the model and the behaviour of software components on which the application depends.

An attacker or accidental input may attempt to steer an assistant away from the intended task. Appropriate restrictions should ensure that a mistaken response or unauthorised request cannot directly alter safety-critical systems or bypass checks intended for human operators.

Separating operational networks

Network segmentation is identified as one element of Defenda's approach to protecting the integrated platform. Separating guest connectivity, crew applications and important technical systems can reduce the paths through which an incident might spread.

Segmentation is effective only when access rules and monitoring are maintained. Individual vessels require specific design because propulsion, navigation, audiovisual systems and hotel equipment differ in interfaces and the degree of remote connectivity they support.

Software supply-chain and access controls

The project includes reviewing source code, third-party software dependencies and the security of connections to other devices. Crew permissions and the handling of remote maintenance access are especially important when external contractors provide ongoing support.

Updating a component can introduce new behaviour even if the original design was reviewed. Documented change control, timely patches and a clear inventory of network-connected equipment are therefore central to long-term reliability.

Potential benefits for crews and owners

A properly integrated local assistant might make onboard information more accessible to captains, engineers and interior teams, particularly when a yacht is away from reliable communications coverage. The promise depends on the system presenting trustworthy information without creating unsafe shortcuts.

No published statement about this collaboration demonstrates that every proposed feature has been independently certified or installed across an entire fleet. Owners considering such technology should ask about testing, cybersecurity responsibility and support arrangements for their specific yacht.

What the collaboration confirms

The October reporting establishes Defenda's involvement alongside Next Yacht Group, AI Technologies and YES Group, and identifies security-by-design as the central concern. It does not provide a new independent security certificate, customer fleet total or quantified reduction in cyber incidents.

Future coverage should follow verified installations, documented testing and technical specifications released by the responsible companies. Until then, the development is an important supplier collaboration addressing the security of connected superyacht services.
