PALFINGER Unveils PFM 3700 and PFM 4800 for Superyacht Applications

PALFINGER has previewed its new PFM 3700 and PFM 4800 foldable knuckle-boom cranes, with load and outreach figures aimed partly at superyacht applications.

PALFINGER has previewed two new heavy-duty foldable knuckle-boom cranes, the PFM 3700 and PFM 4800, with the manufacturer explicitly identifying superyachts among their intended applications. The models extend the company's PFM marine range into higher lifting capacities while also increasing outreach compared with the equipment they replace.

The cranes were shown as part of PALFINGER's SMM 2026 programme in Hamburg, where the company also presented lifesaving equipment and other marine lifting systems. For large yachts, cranes in this class can be used for substantial tenders, rescue craft, submersibles, vehicles and other equipment that places high loads on deck structure and machinery.

More reach without a major weight penalty

PALFINGER says development of the new PFM models focused on increasing performance while retaining the reliability of the previous PFM 3500 and PFM 4500. Load capacity has risen by as much as 28 per cent, while maximum outreach has been extended by up to 5.2 metres.

The PFM 3700 can lift 8.9 tonnes at an outreach of 23.4 metres, while the larger PFM 4800 is rated for 10.6 tonnes at 25.4 metres. Those figures put both cranes into a category where structural integration, deck loading and stability calculations become central parts of the yacht design rather than secondary equipment considerations.

Why crane geometry matters on a superyacht

A yacht crane is often required to lift a heavy tender clear of bulwarks, side decks or beach-club structures before lowering it into the water. Additional outreach can therefore be as important as headline lifting capacity because it determines where equipment can be stored and how far the load must travel from the crane pedestal.

Longer reach also creates higher overturning moments, so the crane cannot be considered in isolation. Naval architects and structural engineers have to account for reinforcement, hydraulic or electrical power, stowed geometry, weather limits and the effect of suspended loads on vessel stability.

Designed for classed marine installations

PALFINGER offers dedicated marine-class versions within the PFM family and highlights class approval, safety controls and lifecycle support as part of the package. The company says the range can be configured with PALTRONIC control technology and is intended for demanding operations where reliability and precise load handling are essential.

For owners adding larger tenders and toys, classed lifting equipment can become a significant part of both newbuild design and refit planning. A crane may need to satisfy not only the weight of today's tender but also the owner's future equipment choices, which makes reserve capacity and deck layout important early decisions.

Superyacht deck equipment keeps getting heavier

The introduction reflects a broader trend toward heavier auxiliary craft and equipment on large yachts. Submersibles, chase boats, rescue craft, personal watercraft and specialist exploration gear can all increase the lifting envelope expected from a yacht's deck machinery.

PALFINGER's new PFM 3700 and 4800 do not target yachts exclusively, but the company has specifically positioned them for superyacht use alongside commercial applications. Their arrival gives builders and refit yards another high-capacity option when the yacht's mission requires equipment that cannot be handled by conventional tender cranes.
