Sanlorenzo has signed a strategic partnership with BYD Energy Storage to explore advanced battery systems for future yacht platforms under its Road to 2030 programme.
Sanlorenzo has signed a strategic partnership with BYD Energy Storage, establishing a long-term research and development programme focused on advanced batteries for future yachts. The agreement appoints BYD Energy Storage as a technology supplier and official battery supplier to Sanlorenzo as the builder develops quieter, lower-impact and more intelligently managed onboard energy systems.
The agreement is broader than the supply of battery packs for individual projects. Sanlorenzo says the two companies will work together on research intended to understand how advanced energy storage can be integrated into future yacht architectures with greater efficiency, reliability and operational flexibility.
Large yachts place unusual demands on batteries because hotel loads, propulsion support, peak-power requirements and long periods at anchor all create different operating profiles. Designing the system around those profiles can reduce generator running time and allow more electrical loads to be managed without compromising comfort.
BYD Energy Storage has developed battery technologies across transport and stationary power applications, giving Sanlorenzo access to experience beyond the marine sector. The partnership is intended to translate that capability into yacht-specific solutions rather than simply adapting a standard industrial product.
For a yacht builder, that collaboration can influence packaging, thermal management, control software and the way batteries interact with generators and shore power. Those details are particularly important on superyachts, where technical spaces are tightly planned and owners expect quiet operation without losing redundancy.
Sanlorenzo is positioning the agreement within its Road to 2030 programme, which includes work on alternative fuels, hybrid systems and energy management. The company has already identified battery storage as one of the technologies that can deliver measurable reductions in local emissions and noise before zero-emission fuels become widely available.
That makes advanced batteries useful even on yachts that retain conventional engines. They can support hotel loads at anchor, smooth power demand and create periods of low-noise operation while also providing a foundation for future hybrid propulsion strategies.
The practical challenge will be turning laboratory and automotive-scale advances into systems that meet class, flag and owner requirements for marine use. Safety, fire protection, lifecycle performance and serviceability remain central issues, particularly as battery installations grow in capacity.
For Superyacht Guide readers, the partnership is significant because it connects one of the industry’s major builders directly with a global battery specialist. If the programme produces repeatable yacht platforms rather than one-off installations, it could accelerate the adoption of higher-capacity energy storage across Sanlorenzo’s larger ranges.
