Sanlorenzo has launched LIFE MYSTIC, a European-backed programme intended to deliver a green-methanol bi-fuel superyacht by the end of the decade.

Sanlorenzo has unveiled LIFE MYSTIC, a strategic development programme aimed at building what the company describes as the first green-methanol bi-fuel superyacht by the end of the decade. The project brings the shipyard together with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi, representing MAN, and is co-funded by the European Union.

Green methanol sits at the centre of the programme

LIFE MYSTIC is intended to test how methanol can move from commercial-shipping research into practical large-yacht operation. Sanlorenzo’s objective is a bi-fuel installation capable of using conventional fuel while also operating on green methanol, giving the project a transitional pathway rather than depending on a single fuel from the outset.

The attraction of methanol is its ability to be stored as a liquid at ambient conditions and handled with systems already familiar to the maritime sector. The challenge for yachts is fitting the fuel, safety architecture and engine technology into a vessel where space, weight, noise and guest comfort remain critical design constraints.

The project combines yard, engine and systems expertise

Sanlorenzo is working with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi, the latter representing MAN, to develop the propulsion concept and integrate it within a superyacht platform. The programme is therefore not limited to an engine trial; it requires coordinated work across machinery, fuel storage, control systems and overall vessel design.

That supply-chain approach is important because alternative-fuel projects can fail if individual technologies are developed in isolation. A superyacht has to function as one system, so fuel selection affects tank arrangement, range, redundancy, maintenance access and the owner’s expectations for quiet and reliable operation.

LIFE MYSTIC forms part of Sanlorenzo’s Road to 2030

The initiative sits within Sanlorenzo’s wider Road to 2030 strategy, which is intended to reduce the environmental impact of its yacht portfolio through new propulsion, energy-storage and fuel technologies. The company is positioning LIFE MYSTIC as one of the practical research programmes that can move those ambitions toward production-ready solutions.

European Union co-funding also places the project within a broader industrial effort to accelerate lower-carbon marine technology. For yacht builders, access to collaborative research can reduce the risk of developing systems that must later meet complex safety, certification and fuel-handling requirements.

A successful demonstrator could influence future large yachts

If the programme reaches its objective, the resulting vessel would provide valuable operational data on fuel consumption, emissions, bunkering, maintenance and onboard integration. Those lessons could help determine whether green methanol becomes a practical option for a wider range of custom and semi-custom superyachts.

For Superyacht Guide readers, the significance lies in the move from concept studies toward a named development programme with industrial partners. The superyacht sector will still need dependable green-methanol supply and clear regulatory pathways, but LIFE MYSTIC gives Sanlorenzo a concrete platform on which to test the technology.
