Steerprop says the compact dimensions of the SP 8 CRP were a decisive factor in the selection because the yacht project imposed particularly tight space constraints.
The propulsion package consists of two SP 8 CRP units, each rated at 700kW. The design combines Steerprop’s azimuth propulsion architecture with contra-rotating propellers, an arrangement intended to produce high thrust while keeping the machinery package compact.
For the yacht project, that packaging was central to the contract. Steerprop says the ability to deliver the required thrust within the available installation envelope helped secure the order, placing engineering constraints rather than brand visibility at the centre of the supplier selection.
The SP 8 CRP units use permanent-magnet motors and pressure lubrication. Those features form part of Steerprop’s approach to compact electric-drive integration, with the propulsion units designed around the operational and maintenance demands of high-end marine applications.
The yacht itself remains confidential. Steerprop has identified neither the owner nor the shipyard, so the announcement is primarily a technology and supplier-development story rather than a new-build identity reveal.
Steerprop’s use of contra-rotating propellers is not new to the company. Its official release points to roughly 25 years of CRP experience, including the River Aria installation, giving the yacht order a technology lineage that predates the company’s move into this market segment.
What is new is the application. The order represents Steerprop’s first yacht project, broadening a propulsion portfolio better known from commercial and specialised vessels into the private-yacht sector.
