Sunlight Starts 300MWh Lehmann Marine Battery Production in Greece

Sunlight Group has brought a dedicated automated manufacturing and assembly line for Lehmann Marine battery systems into operation at Xanthi in northern Greece. The company says the facility can target annual output of up to 300MWh, increasing its capacity to serve marine electrification projects from a European industrial base.

The first 82 CUBE units have completed assembly and quality control, according to the September announcement. That is an initial production milestone, not a statement that the plant has already reached its full annual capacity or delivered that volume into service.

A Greek production line with a German final test

Sunlight is combining battery manufacturing capability with the maritime systems experience of its Lehmann Marine subsidiary. The industrial model assigns automated assembly and preparation to Xanthi, while the final factory acceptance test takes place at Lehmann's Hamburg premises in the presence of the customer.

That two-location arrangement puts production repeatability and client-specific acceptance into different stages. Yacht yards specifying energy-storage systems should establish the documentation and test evidence they will receive for their own installation rather than assume that a factory production figure describes vessel compliance.

The stated 300MWh is a potential annual manufacturing volume for maritime battery systems. It is not the capacity of a single yacht installation, nor does it reveal how many particular vessel projects will be supplied each year.

What 300MWh of annual capacity represents

Lehmann Marine specialises in battery-system sales, installation and maintenance, giving the new line an operational route beyond cell or module production. Sunlight says its production expansion is intended to respond to demand for certified lithium iron phosphate systems and reduce exposure to global supply-chain disruption.

For yachts, electrical energy storage may help manage hotel loads, generator running hours and hybrid-power arrangements. The actual value depends on the vessel's power profile, battery chemistry, ventilation, fire protection, energy management and operating limits, all of which require project engineering.

An owner considering battery refit should also examine access to specialist support at future cruising destinations. A European manufacturing chain can strengthen supply continuity, but service arrangements and replacement-unit availability still have to be confirmed contractually.

The relevance to yacht energy systems

The first applications of this line are not described in the announcement as a new superyacht delivery. The development belongs to the wider shipbuilding and equipment supply chain, where passenger craft, workboats and larger yachts draw on overlapping energy technologies.

Sunlight says additional production lines could be added in future, although this is an option rather than a confirmed expansion date. The company links the investment to skilled employment and export activity in the Xanthi region.

Production and approval remain separate questions

Design teams should ask for the relevant approved system configuration, factory acceptance procedure and warranty responsibilities before choosing storage for an individual yacht. Type approval of a battery component is not a substitute for approval of its installed cooling, ventilation, containment and control arrangements.
