NAVTOR Gains DNV Type Approval for Digital Logbooks

Another approval for electronic records

NAVTOR has announced DNV Type Approval for its Digital Logbooks platform. The August update adds DNV to approvals already listed from ClassNK, Lloyd’s Register and Korean Register.

The development addresses the operational challenge of moving from paper logs to electronic recordkeeping. It does not mean that every vessel can disregard the documentary requirements of its flag state.

Why approvals matter

Shipowners and managers can encounter different survey interpretations when introducing electronic logs. NAVTOR says the new approval is intended to reduce uncertainty during certification and encourage a more consistent implementation process.

Class approval relates to a defined system and scope, not blanket permission for every type of log or every jurisdiction. An operator should obtain confirmation from its flag administration and applicable survey authority.

A wider onboard platform

The Digital Logbooks system forms part of NAVTOR’s connected approach to vessel information and reporting. The supplier also describes linking operational records with shore-side management workflows.

Superyacht managers handling several vessels may be interested in consistency and reduced duplicate entries. Any adoption must still account for access controls, backups and how crew members verify entered information.

A practical next step

Electronic records can improve availability and coordination when implemented correctly, but they also change training and system dependencies. A transition plan should define who enters data and how records remain available during failures.
