Winch Design is celebrating 40 years since Andrew Winch founded the practice in 1986, tracing its growth from a yacht studio into a multidisciplinary design business.
Winch Design is marking its 40th anniversary in 2026, four decades after Andrew Winch founded the London practice as a specialist yacht-design studio. The company has since expanded into aviation and private residences while retaining large custom yachts as one of the central disciplines within its multidisciplinary design operation.
Andrew Winch established the practice in 1986 with an ambition to push beyond conventional yacht-design thinking and create highly individual environments for private clients. Yacht work formed the original foundation of the business and helped establish the studio’s approach to complex, end-to-end design commissions.
Over time, those methods expanded into aircraft interiors and private residences, allowing the studio to apply similar principles of craftsmanship, materials and client personalisation across very different technical environments. The result is a business whose three disciplines now share design resources and specialist expertise.
Winch Design moved to employee ownership in 2021, placing the studio in the hands of the team responsible for delivering its projects. The company describes that structure as part of a wider effort to support long-term independence, collaboration and continuity across its design disciplines.
For private-client studios, ownership structure can influence succession and the retention of design culture because individual projects often run for several years. Employee ownership provides one route for preserving continuity beyond the career of a founder while giving staff a direct stake in the firm’s future.
The studio relocated to new premises in 2024 as its yacht, aviation and residential teams became more integrated. Winch says the multidisciplinary setup allows specialists to work across complex projects while drawing on common visualisation, materials, procurement and design-management capabilities.
Large superyachts increasingly resemble major architectural projects in their programme complexity, combining guest accommodation, wellness, entertainment and technical systems inside a highly constrained moving platform. Access to expertise developed in aviation and residential work can therefore influence how interiors are planned and detailed.
Winch Design is using the anniversary to reflect on a portfolio that has moved from early yacht commissions into some of the largest and most technically demanding private projects in the world. The studio continues to position curiosity, craftsmanship and integrated design as the common thread across that growth.
The milestone also arrives as yacht owners expect greater integration between architecture, technology and personal lifestyle requirements. For Winch Design, the next phase will test how a mature studio preserves its identity while adapting to new materials, digital tools and changing expectations around how large private yachts are used.
