Yanmar has acquired long-standing distributor Boatswain's Locker, bringing West Coast marine engine and Vetus product support into its US operations.
Yanmar has acquired Boatswain's Locker, a marine distribution and service business with a history dating to 1939. The company has represented Yanmar Marine International on the US West Coast, supplying technical support and machinery-related products in a region that includes both major yacht ports and remote cruising destinations.
The distributor's territory encompasses California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. Bringing the business into Yanmar's group is intended to strengthen coordination between the manufacturer, local dealers and the technical teams that support equipment already installed aboard vessels.
Boatswain's Locker handles marine propulsion support but also represents VETUS products. Yanmar's recreational marine interests include other specialist brands such as Maxwell, Flexofold and Smartgyro, which operate in areas including anchoring systems, propulsion components and stabilisation.
That breadth matters because a yacht may depend on several interconnected pieces of equipment supplied by different brands within the same corporate group. Access to correct technical information, spare parts and service procedures can influence how quickly a yard completes planned maintenance.
The West Coast territory covers an enormous geographical range and very different operating conditions. A yacht visiting southern California may require quick support during a short refit, while a vessel cruising farther north or to Alaska may need carefully planned spares before entering a remote area.
An integrated distribution network cannot eliminate distance, but it may reduce uncertainty about whom to contact for an equipment issue. The most useful results for owners will be more reliable dealer response, accurate parts identification and continuity of service over many years.
Robert Apted is remaining president of Boatswain's Locker as the acquisition is implemented. Retaining leadership can help preserve established dealer and customer relationships while corporate processes are aligned with the wider manufacturer.
The business will also work alongside Mastry Engine Center in Yanmar's North American organisation. That arrangement offers opportunities for coordinated technical training and logistics, but changes to individual service terms have not been specified in the announcement.
Yanmar reports a worldwide network of more than 2,000 authorised marine dealers across over 130 countries. Bringing one established distributor under direct ownership may improve consistency in a significant regional market, particularly for customers who travel between territories.
The acquisition does not announce a new superyacht construction contract or identify a named yacht receiving new equipment. Its relevance lies in the after-sales network on which owners, captains and refit contractors depend once vessels are in service.
