ZF has introduced the 9200 A/V PTI transmission, handling up to 3,903 kW of main-engine power and about 700 kW of hybrid electric power take-in.
ZF Marine has extended its large-vessel driveline range with the ZF 9200 A/V PTI, a new transmission rated for main-engine power up to 3,903 kW. Its integrated power take-in can accept roughly 700 kW from an electric motor, allowing the gearbox to form part of a hybrid propulsion arrangement rather than serving only as a mechanical reduction gear.
ZF presented the new unit at SMM 2026 alongside the AT 110, the largest azimuth thruster in the company's range. Although the launch addresses several commercial-vessel classes, the power level and hybrid architecture make the transmission relevant to designers assessing machinery options for large yachts and support vessels.
The PTI arrangement allows an electric machine to feed power into the driveline through the gearbox. ZF says this can support low-noise manoeuvring, locally exhaust-emission-free operation and electric boost when additional propulsion power is required.
That flexibility is useful in hybrid designs because the electric machine does not have to replace the main engines to change the vessel's operating profile. Depending on battery capacity and generator architecture, it can instead support harbour movements, low-load operation, peak shaving or short periods of propulsion without the main engines running.
The ZF 9200 A/V PTI accepts up to 3,903 kW of main drive power and offers both V-drive and down-angle installation configurations. ZF has also given the unit a wide range of gear ratios so naval architects can match different propeller speeds, engine characteristics and electric-motor sizes.
The housing is aluminium to keep weight and package size under control, while the design is intended for full classification approval. Optional power take-off equipment, an integrated shaft brake and alternative mounting arrangements add further flexibility when the transmission is incorporated into a complete propulsion room layout.
For superyachts, the value of a hybrid gearbox depends on the rest of the energy system around it. Batteries, generators, hotel loads, shore power and the yacht's real speed profile determine whether electric propulsion delivers meaningful fuel, noise or emissions benefits.
A 700 kW PTI creates useful operating possibilities, but it does not by itself define the yacht's electric range or efficiency. Those outcomes depend on how much electrical energy is available, how often the yacht can recharge and whether the vessel spends enough time in the operating modes where the hybrid system offers an advantage.
Alongside the transmission, ZF introduced the AT 110 azimuth thruster for power ratings up to 2,944 kW. The two products show the company extending its portfolio toward larger, more power-intensive vessels while retaining electrification and integration as central design themes.
For yacht builders, the important development is the widening choice of high-power propulsion hardware that can combine conventional engines with electrical machinery. As owners ask for quieter harbour operation and more flexible energy use, components such as the ZF 9200 provide another route to hybridisation without abandoning proven mechanical propulsion.
