The 37-metre motorsailer Atlantide has returned to service following a major rebuild by Huisfit. Nearly a century after launch, the yacht is again operating as a companion vessel to a J Class racing yacht, this time supporting Hanuman.
The owners use Atlantide as both a day boat and regatta tender, recreating part of the support structure that surrounded major racing yachts in the 1930s. The rebuild was therefore intended to preserve the yacht’s character while making her practical for modern operations.
Huisfit updated stabilisation, air conditioning, insulation and other onboard systems while retaining historic materials and details wherever possible. The result is intended to deliver contemporary comfort without making the yacht feel newly manufactured.
That balance is especially important on a vessel whose appeal depends heavily on authenticity. Modern systems must operate discreetly so they do not overwhelm the proportions, joinery and visual language that define the original design.
Atlantide’s return demonstrates how a major rebuild can give a historic yacht a new operational purpose rather than simply preserve her as an artefact. She now works actively alongside Hanuman in regattas and private cruising.
For Huisfit, the project is also a reference for complex heritage work. Rebuilding an older yacht requires different skills from new construction because the team must understand original structure, later modifications and the long-term consequences of every intervention.
