ABB has commissioned a three-berth, multi-frequency shore-power system in Portsmouth, offering a current example of high-capacity port electrification.
ABB has brought a high-voltage, multi-berth shore-power installation into operation at Portsmouth International Port. The system can serve the port's three busiest berths and allows compatible ferries and cruise ships to switch off onboard engines while connected to the shore grid.
The project is designed for commercial passenger vessels rather than a superyacht marina, but it provides a useful current example of the electrical infrastructure required when ports move towards high-capacity shore connections. Similar engineering questions increasingly affect large-yacht destinations.
The Portsmouth installation supports 11 kV and 6.6 kV connections at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz. ABB also supplied the wider electrical infrastructure and devised cable-management solutions for ships whose connection points do not sit in a standard location.
That flexibility matters because shore-power compatibility depends on voltage, frequency, connector position and available capacity. Superyachts likewise require the marina and yacht systems to match before a connection can replace onboard generation.
The port estimates that shore power will avoid around 20,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions from ship calls each year from 2027, while also reducing local noise and air pollution. Those are project estimates tied to expected commercial-vessel usage rather than measured superyacht savings.
Actual reductions depend on how often ships connect and the carbon intensity of the electricity supplied. Shore power therefore works best when infrastructure, vessel compatibility and energy sourcing are considered together.
Growing yacht hotel loads and increasing battery capacity are pushing some marinas towards more sophisticated power distribution and monitoring. Portsmouth's multi-user installation demonstrates how a port can design around different vessels while retaining remote support and centralised shore equipment.
ABB's official webstory provides the technical configuration and current operational status. Superyacht Guide has linked the existing ABB Marine & Ports company profile and clearly distinguishes the commercial-port case from a yacht-specific installation.
