A+T Instruments has unveiled a five-inch HFD5 transflective colour display with NMEA 2000 connectivity, physical controls and Wi-Fi software updates.
A+T Instruments has introduced the HFD5, a five-inch instrument display designed in part as a direct replacement for the discontinued B&G H5000 display. The older instrument appeared on thousands of sailing yachts before production ended in early 2026. Owners may still have working wind and sailing-navigation sensors even when the screen at one helm or mast position has failed or become difficult to support.
A replacement that occupies the same panel cut-out can save substantial alteration work. On a large yacht with a carefully finished bridge, cutting a new opening can affect cabinetry, waterproofing, wiring and the position of neighbouring controls. The HFD5 is intended to address this specific practical problem, not simply add another general-purpose navigation screen.
The HFD5 receives instrument information through NMEA 2000 using a Micro-C connector. It is powered from the network bus and can present a configurable selection of data. That makes it attractive when updating an existing arrangement, but crews should still verify the precise messages transmitted by their yacht's sensors and any gateways between older systems.
Not every legacy display speaks NMEA 2000 natively, and matching the physical hole does not mean every old instrument function will work without configuration. A bridge electronics survey remains important before ordering a replacement for a complex sailing or motor yacht.
The new unit uses a transflective colour screen designed to remain readable under changing sunlight. The manufacturer has also chosen physical keys rather than a touchscreen. Gloves, spray and wet hands can make touch-only interfaces inconvenient in the exposed positions where sailing instruments are often fitted.
Magnetic and proximity-based switch technology helps preserve a sealed enclosure without ordinary openings around mechanical keys. Software updates are delivered over built-in Wi-Fi, avoiding a service procedure that requires opening the device simply to change its operating software.
A mast-mounted display needs strong visibility from the cockpit, while a screen next to the wheel is used at much closer range. These positions demand different font sizes, alarm presentation and control access. A configurable graphical display may let crews prioritise wind, heading, boat speed or other measurements according to where it is installed.
On a superyacht, the electronics package may include a mixture of sailing instruments, navigation processors and specialist performance software. Integration with the wider system should be documented so that replacement hardware does not introduce conflicting values or create additional maintenance problems.
A+T Instruments offers the HFD5 with a three-year warranty covering materials and components. The main value of the new product may lie not in a revolutionary feature but in extending the useful life of otherwise serviceable bridge and sailing instrument arrangements.
Captains and technical officers considering the display should request dimensional drawings, a compatibility check and a commissioning plan. The HFD5 is a commercial marine electronics product; its success on a specific yacht will be demonstrated by reliable readings and everyday usability rather than by promotional specifications alone.
