Bosch Demonstrates Its Electric Marine Drive for Yacht and Tender Builders

Bosch Engineering is demonstrating its electric-drive approach on the water at La Rochelle, putting its high-voltage marine package in front of builders and integrators. The company presents the Electric Drive for Marine Applications, or EDM, as a route to installing a complete inboard system without assembling every control and power component independently.

The specified EDM160 motor is rated at 160hp continuous and weighs approximately 180 kilograms, according to Bosch's technical description. The package targets smaller ships and boats, including applications that may be relevant to superyacht tenders and associated support craft.

What the EDM160 package contains

Bosch lists the electric motor, gearbox, inverter, DC/DC converter, onboard charger, drive and battery cooling, electrical control box and cabling within the integrated scope. A charging inlet is included, while display and thrust-lever options can be requested depending on the installation.

The high-voltage battery itself is deliberately excluded from the standard package. That gives builders freedom to choose capacity and form factor, but moves responsibility for specifying a compatible energy store into the individual project.

Bosch says a standardised communications interface is intended to support different market batteries. Compatibility still needs to be demonstrated with the selected battery-management system, cooling architecture, charging strategy and safety arrangements before a vessel is commissioned.

Battery choice remains with the project

Two EDM units can be configured as a twin-propeller installation for higher power demands. A separated-component variant is also offered where an existing machinery space cannot accommodate the preassembled arrangement as one block.

Alongside the integrated EDM, Bosch offers an Electric Drive System Platform using its own components with selected third-party equipment. This modular option is intended for yards and integrators that need to tailor motors, power electronics and control functions to a particular hull.

The company's published components include SMG electric motors, inverters, an electric drive control unit and reduction gears. Its industrial background includes high-volume automotive manufacturing, although performance on a boat must still be established through marine-specific testing.

A second, modular route to electrification

For a yacht tender, range cannot be inferred from motor horsepower alone. Total displacement, duty cycle, cruising speed, reserve energy, charging at the mothership and local shore facilities influence whether an electric drive suits the operational plan.

Quiet manoeuvring and reduced local exhaust can be useful close to guests and in marina environments. Those benefits should be weighed against tender weight, launch-and-recovery limits, battery replacement access and charging procedures aboard the parent yacht.

Superyacht tenders are a systems-integration question

Bosch states that the EDM is reaching selected pilot customers, while several electric components are already in volume use in marine applications. Buyers should distinguish products already delivered from options still undergoing the particular pilot and commissioning programme.

The La Rochelle demonstration gives builders an opportunity to test the integrated proposition rather than judging only a component specification. Superyacht managers should request verified sea-trial data and a complete responsibility matrix before adopting a system on an operational tender.
