Catalano Shipping Services launches early access for yacht anchorage decision support focused on French Mediterranean and Corsican restrictions.

The French coast has become a complicated place to anchor a large yacht

Catalano Shipping Services has introduced Anchorage Intelligence, a digital planning platform intended to make French Mediterranean anchoring restrictions easier to interpret. A captain may need to understand rules defined by vessel length, local protected areas, published decrees and pilotage requirements before selecting a position for a yacht.

The first coverage area includes the French Mediterranean coast and Corsica. Catalano developed the service using experience from its yacht agency operations together with an in-house technical team, responding to the practical difficulty of finding information that is dispersed across official notices and often written in French.

Vessel-specific filtering is the central difference

Rather than displaying a universal list of anchorages, the platform can use the yacht's dimensions and location to present restrictions that are relevant to that vessel. It includes links or references to official regulatory documents, compulsory pilotage areas and contact information that a crew may need when making arrangements locally.

This is significant for the over-24-metre market because some anchoring provisions distinguish several length classes. A place suitable for a small recreational boat may be restricted for a 45-metre or 70-metre yacht, even if water depth and holding ground initially appear acceptable.

The product supports decisions but does not make them

An interactive map is useful for the initial assessment of an itinerary, especially when owners ask to move at short notice. But it cannot remove uncertainty about weather, the location of other vessels, seabed conditions or current official notices. The captain still needs to assess whether the intended position is safe and lawful.

Clear provenance for every displayed rule matters. When a regulation changes, crews need to know that the digital representation reflects the current authority's requirements, rather than an out-of-date screenshot or an interpretation from a commercial provider.

Testing is complete enough for an early-access phase

Catalano says selected captains and customers have tested the service and that further users can apply for early access. The first version is focused geographically rather than presenting itself as a complete worldwide anchorage database.

Expanding to other cruising grounds may require cooperation with local agents and careful tracking of national differences in maritime rules. It also requires reliable software updating, since anchorage restrictions often change independently of the charts and navigation electronics carried aboard a yacht.

Why this matters to captains and yacht managers

Large yachts commonly make itinerary decisions through a combination of owners' requests, local agent advice, formal regulations and the bridge team's judgement. A tool that shortens the process of collecting documents could be useful without becoming the sole authority for the decision.

Catalano describes Anchorage Intelligence as decision support. It is not an exemption from anchoring rules, an official navigational publication or an automatic permit. Its success should be measured by accuracy, clarity and crew confidence in the information presented.
