Garmin and DAN Link Satellite SOS with Specialist Dive Support

A satellite SOS can now carry dive-specific context

Garmin and Divers Alert Network have created a process linking inReach SOS coordination with DAN's specialist dive-emergency support. Active DAN members can add their membership identification to the Emergency Notes field in an inReach account so Garmin Response can share the relevant information during an emergency.

For superyachts supporting diving programmes, the arrangement can help connect a remote distress alert with people familiar with diving medicine and hyperbaric treatment. It does not replace the yacht's own dive plan, oxygen equipment, qualified personnel or emergency procedures.

Garmin Response remains the coordination point

When a user triggers an inReach SOS, Garmin Response communicates with emergency contacts and the relevant rescue or public-safety organisations. The new arrangement allows DAN membership information to be passed into that process where appropriate, adding specialist support without requiring the diver to establish a separate connection during the emergency.

The service depends on a compatible inReach device, active satellite plan and correctly maintained account details. Crew should test ordinary device operation and understand where the unit can communicate before relying on it offshore.

DAN can help identify appropriate medical support

DAN can provide dive-medicine consultation and help identify suitable medical or hyperbaric facilities as a casualty moves into care. Depending on membership and circumstances, the organisation may also assist with other elements of an emergency response.

Medical and evacuation benefits vary with membership terms and location, so owners should not treat the integration as an unlimited insurance guarantee. Yacht managers need to understand the actual coverage applying to the divers onboard.

Remote diving needs several layers of resilience

A superyacht may operate far from a marina, hospital or reliable mobile network, making communications planning particularly important before a dive. Satellite equipment, VHF, onboard first aid, oxygen and an agreed evacuation plan should complement one another rather than depend on a single device.
