GX Superyachts representatives say the 42-metre MERINOS reached 17.4 knots, exceeding an earlier 16-knot forecast, and provided operating figures for hybrid cruising.

A different development from the Monaco launch

The 42-metre GX42 MERINOS has been discussed extensively since its Monaco Yacht Show debut, but a new interview now provides a more specific account of how the yacht performed under way. GX Superyachts representative Maurizio Magri told Daily Nautica that the vessel reached 17.4 knots, ahead of the 16-knot speed figure originally forecast for the project.

Reported trial results are more useful than a concept's estimated figures, but they still need context. Maximum speed can be affected by loading, sea state, fuel, wind and the exact power configuration used during a run. This latest account should therefore be read as the builder-side report of achieved performance, not as a universal speed guarantee for every possible operating condition.

Fuel claims need a measured interpretation

The interview also describes approximate fuel consumption at more relaxed operating speeds. Figures discussed include around 120 litres per hour at a 12.5-knot cruise and less than 70 litres per hour at approximately 10.5 knots under the circumstances described by the interviewees. Those numbers add detail to the claims made for the yacht's hybrid propulsion concept.

An owner comparing vessels should not treat hourly consumption as directly comparable without also considering speed, distance, hotel demand and the size of the vessel. Litres per nautical mile, the propulsion mode and what auxiliary equipment is running can change the apparent efficiency picture. The numbers remain statements reported by project representatives until independently standardised trial information is available.

A hybrid system serving different missions

The project combines conventional engines with batteries and electrical systems intended to give the crew flexibility between passage-making and quieter time at anchor. In discussing the technology, GX representatives referred to a substantial battery installation and solar-generation capability. The particular balance between propulsion and hotel loads is significant because it determines when stored electricity can replace generator running.

Descriptions of extended generator-free time at anchor should always be read alongside power demand and prevailing conditions. Air-conditioning, galley operation, guest occupancy and charging needs can turn a theoretical endurance figure into a much shorter practical period. The latest interview is useful precisely because it offers figures owners can question in more detail, rather than relying solely on broad sustainability language.

What the update means for buyers and builders

MERINOS sits in a segment where range, interior volume and environmental performance must be weighed together. For a yacht designed to cover long passages, the ability to choose between speed and economical cruising is as important as the best recorded maximum. Buyers should request the underlying test conditions and clarify whether published consumption figures include the electrical demands of the entire vessel.

The latest information does not represent a second launch or another Monaco unveiling; those milestones have already been reported. Its news value is the new performance testimony from people involved with the GX42. As builders increasingly promote hybrid systems, the industry will benefit from a consistent way to disclose real-world running data across different yacht sizes.
