Hamworthy’s Ultra Trident MBR combines biological treatment with ultrafiltration for black and grey water, with capacities extending to 200m³ per day.
Hamworthy's Ultra Trident MBR wastewater-treatment range combines biological processing with membrane separation to treat both black and grey water before discharge. The equipment spans hydraulic capacities from 3.7 to 200 cubic metres per day, making the larger models potentially relevant to substantial passenger vessels and large yachts with demanding hotel loads.
Wastewater treatment is an increasingly important part of superyacht machinery design because guest numbers, crew complements, laundries, galleys and hotel services can generate significant daily flows. Treatment quality also matters in environmentally sensitive cruising grounds where owners and operators may choose standards that go beyond the minimum legally required discharge regime.
Wastewater first enters a bioreactor, where biological processes break down organic material. Hamworthy's arrangement then circulates the treated flow through externally mounted ultrafiltration membranes to produce permeate suitable for discharge, with an interstage filter removing unwanted solids before the later biological stage.
The system can be configured for carbonaceous treatment or for nutrient removal using nitrification and denitrification. Hamworthy says the membrane arrangement also eliminates microplastics from the treated effluent, adding another environmental consideration beyond conventional sewage-treatment performance.
Hamworthy positions the externally mounted membranes as a way to improve accessibility and operational flexibility. A membrane clean-in-place system is included as standard, while low-fouling membrane technology is intended to support energy efficiency and reduce chemical consumption.
Those characteristics are relevant aboard yachts because environmental systems must remain serviceable without consuming disproportionate engineering hours. A compact plant that performs well when new is of limited value if routine cleaning, membrane replacement or fault diagnosis becomes difficult once surrounding machinery has been installed.
The Ultra Trident MBR is designed in accordance with IMO MEPC.227(64) and Alaska GP2013DB000 requirements. Hamworthy also cites testing of its membrane bioreactor technology under US National Sanitary Foundation procedures and operational scrutiny involving US authorities in Alaska.
Actual compliance for a yacht depends on the installed configuration, certification, flag requirements and where the vessel operates. Designers therefore need to match treatment capacity and effluent performance to the yacht's real operating profile rather than selecting equipment solely from nominal guest and crew numbers.
Large-yacht technical specifications increasingly treat sewage, grey water, oily water and solid-waste systems as core engineering rather than secondary hotel equipment. Owners expect access to sensitive anchorages, while captains and engineers need systems capable of supporting extended operation away from shore reception facilities.
Ultra Trident illustrates how membrane technology can address that requirement through high-quality effluent and relatively low chemical use. For superyacht projects, the key engineering questions remain capacity, redundancy, footprint, power consumption and the ability to maintain the plant during a long cruising programme.
