There is no single dedicated superyacht scrapyard. Large yachts enter specialist ship-recycling facilities, with acceptance depending on flag, size, condition, transport requirements and environmental rules.
There is no single official facility known as “the superyacht scrapyard.” When a large yacht reaches the end of its life, it normally enters the wider ship-recycling industry and is accepted by a facility capable of handling its size, construction, hazardous materials and legal status. Different yards specialise in different vessel types and capacities, so acceptance is normally agreed project by project.
The word scrapyard can make the process sound informal, but regulated ship recycling is a specialised industrial activity. The International Maritime Organization requires compliant facilities to work under authorised recycling plans, worker-safety procedures, environmental controls, emergency arrangements and ship-specific documentation.
For a yacht owner, the practical question is therefore not “where is the yacht scrapyard?” but “which authorised facility can legally and safely recycle this particular vessel?” That answer can depend on flag, tonnage, hull material, location, condition, transport requirements and whether the yacht is still capable of making a final voyage. It can also change as facilities enter or leave approved lists and as local capacity becomes available.
Commercial ships, offshore vessels, ferries, naval auxiliaries and large yachts can all require end-of-life dismantling, so the infrastructure is generally organised around ship recycling rather than around the leisure market alone. A facility that can safely dismantle a steel ship may be able to accept a superyacht, but that does not mean every yard will take every yacht.
Superyachts can create unusual project requirements because they contain far more hotel equipment, decorative materials and specialist systems than many workboats of similar tonnage. Large amounts of timber, stone, glass, insulation, electronics, batteries, refrigeration plant, luxury furniture and composite components may have to be separated before the metal structure reaches the conventional scrap stream.
Size also matters in ways that are not obvious from length alone. A yacht may have deep draft, damaged machinery, unstable compartments or an unusual hull form, and a recycling facility has to consider berth access, lifting capacity, containment arrangements and how the vessel can be moved safely as sections are removed.
Türkiye is a major ship-recycling state and is a party to the Hong Kong Convention. The Aliağa region on the Aegean coast is widely associated with ship dismantling because multiple recycling companies operate there, but the area is an industrial cluster rather than one dedicated superyacht scrapyard.
The European Commission publishes a European List of Ship Recycling Facilities for ships covered by the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. The list includes facilities inside Europe and approved facilities in third countries, and the Commission also publishes inspection material for applicant and listed yards in countries including Türkiye.
Being on an approved list does not mean a yard automatically accepts any yacht that arrives at its gate. Capacity, commercial terms, vessel condition, waste profile and local operating arrangements still have to be agreed, while the final recycling plan must be specific to the actual ship being dismantled.
End-of-life decisions are constrained by more than scrap-metal prices. A yacht may still be registered, mortgaged, insured, classed or subject to contractual obligations, and hazardous materials cannot be transferred across borders without considering the applicable waste and ship-recycling rules.
The flag state can also matter because EU-flagged ships within the scope of the EU regulation are subject to restrictions on where they may be recycled. A yacht changing flag or ownership immediately before recycling can create additional legal questions, so the route to the yard needs to be planned before the vessel is treated as an ordinary commodity.
A damaged yacht presents another problem because the cheapest facility may be thousands of miles away. If engines, steering, stability or watertight integrity are compromised, the cost and risk of towing or heavy-lift transport can outweigh any extra scrap value available at a distant yard.
Before the hull is cut, valuable equipment may be recovered for resale or reuse. Engines, generators, pumps, navigation systems, anchors, deck machinery, tenders and specialist equipment can have residual value, although condition, certification and removal cost determine whether recovery is commercially worthwhile.
Interior stripping can be extensive because a superyacht contains a much larger proportion of finished accommodation than a conventional cargo ship. Joinery, stone, glass, furniture, audiovisual systems, galley equipment and decorative components may need to be removed separately, with hazardous or contaminated material isolated from reusable items and recyclable metals.
Only after decontamination and controlled removal does the main structure become a conventional cutting project. Steel and aluminium sections can be reduced to transportable pieces, non-ferrous metals can be separated, and remaining waste can be routed according to the recycling plan rather than mixed indiscriminately.
Photographs of abandoned yachts sometimes create the impression that large private vessels simply end up beached, sunk or left in remote harbours. That can happen when ownership, insurance or enforcement fails, but abandonment is not the normal regulated route for a valuable 24-metre-plus vessel with recoverable machinery and metal.
Modern ship-recycling law is moving in the opposite direction. The Hong Kong Convention, in force since June 2025, requires authorised facilities, ship-specific recycling plans and inventories of hazardous materials for vessels within its scope, while the EU system adds its own list of approved recycling facilities for covered ships.
For a superyacht, the most likely “scrapyard” is therefore a professional ship-recycling facility selected for that particular project. The yard may dismantle merchant ships on one berth and a large yacht on another, but the yacht still requires its own technical, environmental and commercial plan.
Owners considering end-of-life disposal should start with flag-state, class, legal and recycling specialists rather than with a scrap-metal buyer. The correct facility is the one that can accept the yacht lawfully, make it safe, document the work and separate its materials without turning the vessel's final voyage into an environmental or liability problem.
