Maiora’s newly presented Supernova 50 introduces steel-and-aluminium construction and an ELIE SAAB collaboration to the 50-metre superyacht class.
Maiora has presented the Supernova 50, a fifty-metre superyacht design that marks the Italian builder’s entry into steel-hulled and aluminium-superstructure construction. The model was unveiled in Cannes in September 2026 as the next stage of the shipyard’s work with luxury design brand ELIE SAAB. It extends that collaboration beyond the 42 Exuma while entering a different construction and operational class.
Tommaso Spadolini and ELIE SAAB are credited with the exterior lines and general arrangement. The scheme is therefore a shared architectural proposal rather than simply a completed yacht fitted with branded furnishings. The available company announcement describes a design programme; no completed delivery or signed contract should be inferred from the presentation alone.
The project is intended to remain under 500 gross tons despite its length. Maiora gives a beam of about nine metres and describes extensive exterior accommodation across five decks. Such figures define the design ambition but do not establish the actual displacement, range or operating economics of a vessel once built. Those would require final engineering documentation and verified performance data.
The official general arrangement places an owner’s suite on a dedicated owner’s deck and five guest cabins elsewhere. Two guest suites on the main deck have unusually generous proportions, including one of approximately thirty square metres. Each is described with a private terrace measuring about seven square metres, creating a more independent experience for guests than an ordinary lower-deck cabin.
For an owner who frequently entertains extended family, this separation could be meaningful. Guests may enjoy personal external space without moving through the owner’s private zone. The trade-off is that dedicated terraces and generous circulation use valuable volume and introduce further design requirements. Detailed stability and watertight arrangements will be essential when the concept moves into build engineering.
The five-deck distribution emphasises outdoor living and movement between interior and exterior spaces. Large openings and a water-facing aft zone can be especially attractive at anchor, although operation underway must be considered separately. A prospective purchaser should review protected routes, access for crew and the procedures for securing movable features before treating the renderings as a finished operating plan.
The project’s interior design is described as a collaboration under the creative direction of Elie Saab and Carlo Colombo. The proposed scheme combines pieces associated with the ELIE SAAB Maison collection and bespoke components tailored to use aboard. This approach applies a residential luxury vocabulary to a yacht, but it must be translated into a marine environment with substantial movement and maintenance demands.
Materials, fabrics and furniture that perform well in a residence require careful examination for fire standards, weight, humidity and secure installation at sea. Owners may welcome a recognisable aesthetic, yet the strongest interior projects address daily crew operations as thoroughly as guests’ visual impressions. The company’s announcement does not publish the final approved material schedule for a built hull.
Natural light and the relationship between rooms and the surrounding water are recurring themes in Maiora’s description. Successful glazing design involves more than maximizing glass area. Solar gain, acoustic comfort, privacy, emergency egress and exterior maintenance are all relevant, especially on a superyacht expected to operate across different climates.
Maiora positions the Supernova 50 as a strategic development for its production capabilities. Building a displacement superyacht in steel requires different procedures and specialist resources from constructing smaller fast composite boats. The choice may give future owners more flexibility in endurance and layout, but the operational outcome depends on the full design, weight and machinery package.
The available release confirms the project’s length, core materials, design partners and proposed accommodation. It does not establish an independently tested maximum speed or a delivery date. Buyers interested in the platform should request the current build specification, classification proposal, technical schedule and yard commitments before treating a design concept as an order-ready product.
Supernova 50 is newsworthy for the industrial change it represents as much as for its polished ELIE SAAB interiors. A steel hull, six guest cabins and terraces within a sub-500GT target give Maiora an identifiable position in the fifty-metre segment. The next meaningful milestones will be an announced contract, documented construction and eventually a completed yacht at sea.
