62m SIMENA Wins Blue Wake Special Prize for Hybrid Sailing System
ARES Yachts’ 62-metre sailing yacht SIMENA has received the Monaco Yacht Show Blue Wake special prize for its parallel-hybrid propulsion and regenerative sailing capability.
MAN Engines is positioning its Smart HYBRID Experience as an integrated yacht propulsion and onboard-energy platform rather than a stand-alone electric assist system.
MAN Engines is expanding its role in yacht propulsion through the Smart HYBRID Experience, a modular diesel-electric architecture designed to coordinate propulsion and onboard energy management. The system combines MAN diesel engines with electric motor-generator units, gearboxes and central control, with configurations intended for luxury yachts as well as commercial craft.
MAN presents the Smart HYBRID Experience as a complete system rather than a collection of separately sourced components. The architecture can coordinate propulsion, electrical generation and onboard consumers through a common management layer, giving engineers one control environment for major energy flows.
That system-level approach is particularly relevant to superyachts because hotel demand can remain substantial even when propulsion power is low. Air conditioning, lighting, pumps, entertainment and galley loads all continue to consume energy while a yacht is at anchor or manoeuvring slowly.
The published architecture allows electric motor-generator units rated at 200 kW or 400 kW, depending on the selected configuration. MAN also offers several diesel-engine families within the system, allowing the degree of hybridisation to be adapted to yacht size and performance requirements.
A larger electric machine does not automatically mean a longer silent-running period because battery capacity and hotel demand remain decisive. Naval architects therefore have to balance machinery weight, storage capacity, electrical architecture and expected operating modes before choosing the final propulsion package.
MAN says the control system can synchronise engine and electric-machine speeds when the propulsion mode changes, allowing the clutch to engage or disengage without interrupting propeller torque. The aim is to make transitions less noticeable to guests while reducing mechanical shock through the drivetrain.
The system also monitors conditions around high-load manoeuvres and can call on diesel support when required. That is important because a hybrid yacht still needs predictable propulsion response when the captain orders rapid acceleration, crash-stop action or other safety-critical changes.
The Smart HYBRID Experience has already been selected for Benetti's 40-metre B.Neos platform, where twin MAN V8-900 engines are paired with 200 kW electric motors. That project gives the technology a direct superyacht application rather than leaving it only as a laboratory or workboat concept.
Superyacht Guide is recording the wider system architecture because integrated energy management is becoming a central design issue for new yachts. The practical environmental benefit will still depend on battery source, operating profile, generator strategy and how frequently electric modes are actually used.
