Royal Huisman has explained the structured coding system used across its custom-yacht projects. The method assigns consistent references to parts, drawings, spaces, systems, budgets and work packages so different teams can identify the same item without ambiguity.
The Baseline Project Coding System sets the administrative principles for new builds, while engineering groups are divided into standard categories covering structure, propulsion, electrical systems, interior, rigging and other disciplines. The structure gives every team a shared reference throughout the life of the project.
Each main engineering group is divided into subgroups and more detailed identifiers. Similar logic is used for hull units, accommodation areas, technical sections and financial tracking, connecting physical work with documentation and cost control.
Because the same references remain in the project archive, the system can support service and refit work long after delivery. Crew and yard teams can trace historical information without reinventing the project structure each time work is required.
Custom yachts are unique, but the information systems used to build them do not have to be improvised. Royal Huisman’s approach separates the individuality of the finished yacht from the need for disciplined internal organisation.
That structure becomes more valuable as projects grow in size and technical complexity. Thousands of drawings and components can be linked through a shared language, reducing the chance that separate teams interpret the same part of the yacht differently.
